John M Watson OBE, representing The Watson Foundation, has been accorded a welcome honour by the Scottish Squash Rackets Club (SSRC).
The occasion was to present the Finals Day Prizes to the talented winners at an event impeccably organised as usual by Committee Members Paul Paton and Joe Hely.
And in a surprise development for John, Members presented him with Honorary Membership, unveiled a commemorative plaque and named a court in his honour to reflect his long-standing support for the Club.
The hugely-successful club in Glasgow’s Maryhill is currently enjoying a renaissance having endured some difficult times.
The pandemic and falling numbers added to the challenge of rising costs – notably the need for a roof rebuild which saw John Watson step in and fund the work through The Watson Foundation.
The donation was literally a “game changer” – helping to ensure a bright future for the Club.
Commenting on the court named in his honour and Honorary Membership John said he was “delighted and humbled” by the gesture.
It is now hoped more young members will step forward and seek tuition in squash at all levels ensuring the Club has a bright future as a vital community asset.
The health benefits of squash along with many other forms of exercise have been promoted by both the NHS and Government as essential to a healthy lifestyle.
The Watson Foundation wishes the Club every success for the future and hopes it will continue to flourish.
The Club is based at Malloch Street, Maryhill, Glasgow G20 8TP. More details at www.fastcourts.com/clubs/scottish-squash-rackets-club
